Irish banking — opening an account without an IRP

AIB, Bank of Ireland and Revolut compared, proof-of-address workarounds, IBAN for your wages, and the cheapest way to move taka to euro.

You'll likely need an app-based account before your IRP appointment

Ireland's IRP (Irish Residence Permit) registration can take weeks to get an appointment, but your college, landlord and employer often want a working Irish IBAN much sooner. Figures below are approximate (€1 ≈ ৳142) — verify current fees on each provider's website.

AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB — the traditional banks

These are Ireland's main retail banks, all offering student current accounts.

BankStudent account notesTypical requirements
AIBFree student current account, contactless card, branch network across most college townsPassport, proof of address (utility bill, tenancy agreement or college accommodation letter), often IRP card once available
Bank of IrelandStudent account with no monthly fee, strong appSimilar documents to AIB; some branches accept a college enrolment letter as address proof
PTSB (Permanent TSB)Smaller branch network but competitive student offersSimilar documents; worth comparing if AIB/BOI branches near you have long waits

Traditional banks are the safest long-term home for your salary and rent payments because landlords and some employers are more used to them, but appointment waits and document requirements can be frustrating in your first weeks. Book your branch appointment online as early as possible — some branches are booked out for weeks during September intake.

Revolut and N26 — open one before you even land

These app-only banks are the fastest way to have a working euro account and card, often before you even board your flight to Dublin.

Both Revolut and N26 let you open an account remotely with just a passport and a selfie verification — no Irish address or IRP needed to start. This makes them ideal as your very first euro account: you can load it before you fly, use it to pay a deposit or first month's rent, and receive transfers immediately on arrival. They are not always accepted for salary/payroll by every employer, and some landlords prefer a "real" Irish bank IBAN, so plan to add a traditional bank account once you're settled.

Proof of address workarounds

This is the most common blocker for new students trying to open a traditional bank account in week one.

  1. 1

Ask your college for an official accommodation or enrolment letter

Many Irish colleges' international offices issue a letter on headed paper confirming your name and Irish address, which several banks accept as proof of address for new international students.

  2. 2

    Use your tenancy agreement

A signed lease or licensee agreement with your name and address is usually accepted, though some banks want it alongside a second document.

  3. 3

Fall back on a utility bill once you have one

If a bank rejects the college letter, a phone or electricity bill in your name (or added as a second occupant) after your first month can complete the requirement.

IBAN for wages and rent

Nearly every Irish employer and landlord will ask for an IBAN once you have one.

Your IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is what you give your employer for payroll and your landlord for rent transfers. Set this up as soon as your account is active — being paid in cash or asked to accept unusual payment arrangements is a red flag for both under-the-table work and rental scams.

Cheapest ways to send money to and from Bangladesh

Bank wire transfers are almost always the most expensive option — compare before you send anything home or receive tuition top-ups.

MethodTypical costNotes
WiseLow, transparent % fee + small fixed chargeUsually the cheapest and fastest for EUR↔BDT, mid-market exchange rate shown upfront
Remitly / XoomCompetitive, sometimes free on first transferGood for fast bank-to-bank or cash pickup transfers to Bangladesh
Direct bank wire (AIB/BOI to a Bangladeshi bank)Higher flat fee + weaker exchange rateSlowest and usually most expensive option, avoid unless the receiving bank requires it

Remember Bangladesh Bank's remittance rules: money sent home through legal channels (bank transfer, Wise, Remitly) counts as formal remittance and is straightforward; avoid informal hundi-style transfer arrangements, which are illegal and offer no protection if something goes wrong.

Keep both an app bank and a traditional bank

Use Revolut or N26 for instant setup, cheap FX and daily spending, and add AIB, Bank of Ireland or PTSB once your IRP and address are sorted, for wages, rent and anything requiring a "traditional" IBAN.

Verify current fees and documents before opening any account

Bank documentation requirements, app-bank transfer limits and money transfer fees change often. Always check the current rules directly on aib.ie, bankofireland.com, ptsb.ie, revolut.com, n26.com and wise.com before relying on any figure here.
