How the tiers work
Every major is scored on four things: whether it carries a STEM-designated CIP code (which unlocks the 24-month STEM OPT extension — 3 years of work authorisation total instead of 1), how likely a genuine research or teaching assistantship is, the depth of the graduate job market and H-1B sponsorship in that field, and total realistic cost. Tier 1 majors combine STEM OPT, funding and jobs. Tier 4 majors are visa-legal but frequently leave graduates with debt and no clear work path.

Tier 1 — STEM-designated, funded, hiring
These majors carry a STEM CIP code, have a realistic path to an assistantship at many universities, and have deep, well-documented H-1B sponsor pools.
Computer Science / Computer Engineering (MS)
Tier 1STEM CIP3 years OPT
- Duration
- 1.5–2 years
- Total cost (funded)
- US$5,000–15,000 after assistantship (৳6.1–18.3 lakh)
- Total cost (unfunded)
- US$40,000–70,000 (৳48.8–85.4 lakh)
- Assistantship odds
- Good at public research universities with strong CGPA and a relevant undergrad background
The single most reliable Tier 1 route: STEM OPT, the deepest H-1B sponsor base in the country, and genuine assistantship availability at many public universities.
Electrical / Mechanical / Industrial Engineering (MS)
Tier 1STEM CIP3 years OPT
- Duration
- 1.5–2 years
- Total cost (funded)
- US$5,000–15,000 after assistantship (৳6.1–18.3 lakh)
- Total cost (unfunded)
- US$35,000–60,000 (৳42.7–73.2 lakh)
- Assistantship odds
- Good, especially with a research-active advisor lined up before applying
Deep manufacturing, aerospace and energy-sector hiring; a dependable Tier 1 choice for students from a strong engineering undergrad background.
Data Science / Statistics / Analytics (MS)
Tier 1STEM CIP3 years OPT
- Duration
- 1.5–2 years
- Total cost (funded)
- US$5,000–18,000 after assistantship (৳6.1–22 lakh)
- Total cost (unfunded)
- US$35,000–65,000 (৳42.7–79.3 lakh)
- Assistantship odds
- Moderate to good; competitive at top programmes
Broad hiring across tech, finance and healthcare analytics; verify the specific programme's CIP code, since some 'analytics' degrees are housed in business schools and are not STEM-designated.
Tier 2 — STEM-designated, funding less certain
These carry the STEM OPT benefit but assistantships are more competitive or field-dependent, and job markets are strong but narrower.
| Major | STEM CIP | Assistantship odds | Job market notes |
|---|
| Civil / Structural Engineering (MS) | Yes | Moderate | Strong infrastructure hiring but licensing (PE) matters more long-term than the degree alone |
| Biomedical Engineering (MS) | Yes | Moderate | Good in medtech hubs (Boston, Minneapolis); more PhD-oriented funding than MS-level |
| Applied Mathematics / Actuarial Science (MS) | Yes | Moderate | Actuarial exams matter as much as the degree; strong niche demand |
| Environmental Engineering / Sustainability Science (MS) | Yes | Moderate to good | Growing field but employer sponsorship density is thinner than core CS/EE |
| Information Systems (MS, if STEM-coded) | Varies by programme | Moderate | Confirm CIP code — some information systems degrees sit in non-STEM business CIP codes |
Tier 3 — non-STEM but employable, only 12 months OPT
Legitimate, respected degrees with real job markets, but no STEM OPT extension — you get one 12-month OPT window and must win the H-1B lottery within it, or find a cap-exempt employer.
| Major | Why Tier 3 | Make it work by |
|---|
| MBA (general) | Non-STEM CIP in most programmes; only 12 months OPT | Targeting employers who sponsor consistently, or an MBA with a STEM-coded analytics/business-analytics concentration |
| Finance / Accounting (MS) | Non-STEM at most schools; heavy H-1B lottery dependence | Big-4 or large-bank employers who file H-1B in volume; CPA licensure as a backup plan |
| Public Health (MPH) | Some biostatistics tracks are STEM; general MPH usually is not | Choosing a STEM-coded biostatistics/epidemiology concentration if the goal is longer OPT |
| Economics (MS/MA, non-quantitative track) | Usually non-STEM | Choosing a quantitative/econometrics-heavy programme, some of which are STEM-designated — verify per school |
Always check the exact Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code listed on your specific I-20, not just the department name — two "MS in Business Analytics" programmes at different schools can carry different CIP codes with different OPT outcomes.
Tier 4 — think very hard first
Degrees that are legally valid for an F-1 visa but routinely leave Bangladeshi graduates with high debt and a weak work pathway.
Generic "Master of Arts" programmes with no accreditation-linked licensure path, one-year unfunded non-STEM master's at expensive private universities chosen mainly for prestige, and repeated short certificate stacking with no degree progression. These programmes offer only 12 months of OPT, are frequently at private universities with tuition rarely below US$35,000–45,000/year (৳42.7–54.9 lakh), and place graduates into a single, high-stakes H-1B lottery attempt with no STEM OPT fallback if they are not selected.
The one question that sorts every major
"What is the exact CIP code on my I-20, and is it on the DHS STEM-Designated Degree Program list?" This single fact determines whether you get 12 months or 36 months of work authorisation — check it before you accept an offer, not after you arrive.
Verify at the official source
The STEM-Designated Degree Program list, OPT/STEM OPT rules, and the H-1B cap and registration process are all set and updated by DHS and USCIS and can change with new regulations. Confirm your programme's current STEM eligibility and the latest OPT rules directly on studyinthestates.dhs.gov and uscis.gov, and check current visa guidance at travel.state.gov and bd.usembassy.gov before committing to a major.
