MQA accreditation and SETARA ratings — check both, every time

MQA accreditation confirms a specific programme (not just the institution) meets Malaysia's national quality standard and is recognised for further study and most employment. SETARA (Sistem Penarafan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi) rates the teaching quality of the institution as a whole, on a tiered scale, run by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Always verify a specific programme's MQA status on the MQA's own MQR (Malaysian Qualifications Register) portal, not on an agent's brochure or the institution's marketing page. A university can be legitimate overall while a specific new or unpopular programme lacks full accreditation — check the exact programme code before paying any deposit.

The unranked private colleges Dhaka agents push — verify before you pay anything

A specific pattern targets Bangladeshi families: small private colleges with weak or no SETARA rating, thin employer partnerships and heavy marketing spend through Dhaka education agents who earn large commissions per enrolled student. These colleges often advertise "fast admission," "no IELTS required" and "guaranteed visa," which are red flags, not selling points. Before paying any deposit, independently verify on the MQA's MQR portal that your exact programme is accredited, check the institution's SETARA rating on the Ministry of Higher Education's own listing, and search for the college's actual graduate employment outcomes — not just its brochure. If an agent discourages you from checking these sources yourself, treat that as a serious warning sign.

Application and intake timing

Malaysian universities generally run two or three intakes a year (commonly February/March, July/August and September/October), with EMGS's eVAL processing adding 4-8 weeks for Bangladeshi applicants.

Apply to your target institution at least 4-5 months ahead of your intended intake to leave room for EMGS clearance, single-entry visa endorsement at the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka, and post-arrival medical screening. Confirm each university's specific intake dates and document requirements directly on its international office page, since these vary by faculty.
