UK banking & building credit from zero

Opening a student account with Monzo, Starling, HSBC or Lloyds, proof-of-address workarounds, credit files, and cheap ways to send money home.

You need a UK account fast — for rent, wages and your landlord

Most landlords, employers and student loan/scholarship providers want a UK account, not a Bangladeshi card. Figures below are indicative — always check current fees on each provider's own site.

Digital banks: open in minutes, no proof of address hassle

These fintech apps are usually the easiest first account for a new arrival.

AppGood forNotes
MonzoEveryday UK current accountApp-only, easy budgeting pots, widely accepted
Starling BankEveryday UK current accountSimilar to Monzo, strong app, free international card use
RevolutMulti-currency + sending money to BangladeshNot a full UK bank account by default in some tiers — check if it comes with a UK sort code/account number before relying on it for rent/salary

Digital banks typically only need your passport/BRP-equivalent eVisa, your UK address (even a temporary one, like your first week's Airbnb or halls), and a UK phone number. Many students open one of these within their first 48 hours to receive their first rent or deposit payment, then add a high-street account later if they need one for a specific purpose (a landlord who insists on a "real bank", or building a broader credit history).

High-street banks: more paperwork, sometimes worth it

Traditional banks can offer better in-branch support and are still what some landlords/employers expect.

BankStudent account notes
HSBCRuns international student-friendly accounts; some branches near campuses run welcome desks each September
LloydsOffers a student account with an overdraft facility (interest-free up to a limit, subject to approval)
BarclaysPopular with international students; app + in-branch onboarding
NatWestStudent account with in-branch international student support at many university-city branches
SantanderStudent account sometimes bundled with railcard-style travel perks — check current offers

The proof-of-address problem — and the fix

Banks are legally required to verify your identity and address (anti-money-laundering rules), which is awkward when you've just landed and have no utility bill in your name.

  1. 1

Ask your university for a bank letter

Almost every UK university's international student office issues an official letter confirming your enrolment and UK address (halls or a registered private address) specifically for bank account applications — request this before or right after arrival.

  2. 2

    Use your tenancy agreement

A signed tenancy/lease agreement in your name is usually accepted as address proof by both digital and high-street banks.

  3. 3

Use your BRP/eVisa share code and passport for ID

Most banks now accept the UK's digital immigration status (eVisa) alongside your passport as identity proof — check the bank's current accepted-document list, since UK ID rules have been shifting away from physical BRP cards.

  4. 4

Fall back to a digital bank if a high-street bank stalls

Monzo/Starling generally have lighter address-proofing requirements and can get you banked within days while your high-street application is still pending.

Debit cards and contactless

Almost all UK spending — buses, shops, cafes — assumes contactless.

Your debit card (physical or added to Apple Pay/Google Pay) works for contactless taps under the current UK contactless limit per transaction — check the current limit on gov.uk/your bank's app, as it has risen over time. Set up Apple Pay/Google Pay as soon as your card arrives; it's the fastest way to pay for buses and Oyster-style taps if your city supports contactless transport payment.

Building a UK credit file from zero

You arrive with no UK credit history, which affects mobile contracts, some rentals, and future credit card/loan applications.

Most international students are not on the electoral roll (you generally need to be a UK/Irish/qualifying Commonwealth citizen or have a specific visa category to register to vote), which is one of the biggest inputs to a UK credit score — so don't expect that shortcut. Instead: consider a credit-builder credit card (Aqua, Capital One Classic, or a bank's own credit-builder product) used lightly and paid off in full every month; put a recurring bill (like a phone contract) in your own name once you can; and check your free credit report periodically via Experian, Equifax or ClearScore to track progress. Building a usable credit file typically takes several months of consistent, on-time repayment.

Cheap remittance to and from Bangladesh

Compare live fees and exchange rates before every transfer — margins shift daily.

ServiceTypical useNotes
WiseGBP ↔ BDT transfersUsually among the cheapest for mid-size amounts; shows the real mid-market rate plus a transparent fee
RemitlySending to a Bangladeshi bank account or mobile walletOften has promotional first-transfer rates; compare against the standard rate afterwards
Bank transfer (SWIFT)Larger, occasional transfersUsually the most expensive route once you include hidden margin plus a flat fee — good for large one-off sums with an established bank relationship, poor for regular small transfers

Keep a small backup balance in two accounts

Card fraud freezes and app outages happen. Keeping a small buffer in a second account (e.g. both Monzo and a high-street bank) means you're never fully locked out of paying for essentials.

Never share banking OTPs or let anyone else open an account 'for' you

Money-mule scams specifically target new international students — someone offers cash to let them route money through your new UK account. This is a criminal offence in the UK and can end your visa and your studies immediately. Always verify current rules and get help from ukcisa.org.uk, your bank's official fraud helpline, or your university's international student advice service if anything about a banking request feels off.
