Phone & SIM in the UK — connected on day one

Airalo, Holafly and similar eSIM marketplaces sell short-term UK data plans that install digitally — no physical SIM swap needed if your phone supports eSIM. Use this for your first few days while you pick a proper long-term UK plan; it's rarely the cheapest option beyond the first week.

A monthly rolling SIM-only or PAYG (pay-as-you-go) plan requires no UK credit history — you top up or pay month to month with no long-term commitment. A traditional 12-24 month contract (often bundled with a financed handset) typically runs a credit check; with no UK credit file, you may be rejected or asked for an upfront deposit. Almost every new student should start on PAYG or a rolling SIM-only plan, and only consider a longer contract once settled and with some UK credit history built up.

If most of your international calling is via WhatsApp/IMO on data rather than to actual Bangladeshi phone numbers or landlines, a general budget network (Giffgaff, Smarty) with generous data may suit you better than Lebara/Lycamobile's calling-focused bundles — compare based on your actual usage.

Register your device with your university credentials during orientation/freshers' week. eduroam also gives you free wifi access at thousands of participating universities worldwide, useful if you travel to conferences or visit other campuses.

   Confirm with your Bangladeshi carrier it's unlocked; doing this after arrival is slower and sometimes not possible remotely.

   Keep it minimally topped up, or have a family member keep it active — bKash, Nagad and Bangladeshi bank OTPs still route to that number, and many services won't let you change the registered number remotely.

   Update WhatsApp, Facebook, Google and any account that supports it to your UK number or an authenticator app, keeping the Bangladeshi SIM as fallback during the transition.

   Bank, university portal, landlord, GP registration and any UK delivery/ride-share app depend on it from day one.

WhatsApp, Messenger and IMO handle the vast majority of calls to family and friends in Bangladesh for free over data/wifi. For calling Bangladeshi landlines or non-smartphone numbers, check whether your network already bundles international minutes to Bangladesh (Lebara and Lycamobile plans often do); otherwise a per-minute international calling app or credit top-up is usually cheaper than a standard network's international rate.
