Job competition, not job count, decides how fast you get hired. Auckland has ten times Palmerston North's jobs — and roughly twenty times its student applicants. If your goal is residence rather than a big-city CV, starting in a smaller city and moving to Auckland after you have a Kiwi reference is usually the faster route.

Watch out

Never sign a 12-month tenancy in a city you have never visited. Book four weeks of temporary accommodation, work one part-time job, and only then commit to a lease. Breaking a fixed-term tenancy in New Zealand can cost you the landlord's re-letting fees plus rent until a new tenant is found.
