The route reality from Dhaka
There is no direct flight from Dhaka to New Zealand. Every route involves at least one, usually two, stops — and which hub you transit through changes both the price and the baggage you're allowed.

Auckland is the main international gateway. If you're studying in Christchurch, Wellington or Dunedin, book the domestic leg on the same ticket where possible — a separate domestic booking means you must clear customs, re-check bags and absorb any missed connection yourself.

Never book before your visa is approved
Immigration New Zealand does not require a purchased ticket. Book a refundable or flexible fare only if a provider demands proof of travel.

Search on aggregators, buy from the airline
Use Google Flights or Skyscanner to find the route and fare, then book on the airline's own website. Airline bookings are far easier to change, and third-party agents charge NZ$100–200 to do what the airline does free.

Ask explicitly for the student fare
Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Emirates and Qatar all run student fares with extra baggage (often +10kg) and reduced change fees. It is rarely shown online — call the airline's Dhaka office or an IATA agent and ask for the student fare with your offer letter and visa in hand.

Book 6–10 weeks out, fly midweek
Tuesday and Wednesday departures are consistently cheaper. Avoid late January and early February — that's peak semester-one arrival and fares rise 20–30%.

Choose layovers of 3–5 hours
Under two hours risks a missed connection with checked bags; over eight hours means an overnight you'll pay for. Check whether your transit country needs a visa for Bangladeshi passport holders.

Pay by card in your own name
Keep the receipt. Border officers occasionally ask, and you'll need it if you claim on travel insurance.
