Part-time work โ€” 20 hours, minimum wage, maximum leverage

Where the jobs really are, the CV format Kiwi employers expect, pay rates, and how to turn a casual job into a graduate reference.

The rules first

Most student visas allow up to 20 hours of work per week during term and full-time work during scheduled holidays. Some master's and doctoral students have full-time rights. Your visa conditions are printed on your eVisa โ€” read them, and never exceed them. Working over your limit can end your visa and your residence plan in one step.

Monthly, after tax

That covers rent and food in most cities outside Auckland. It does not cover tuition โ€” never plan your fees around part-time earnings, and never tell an immigration officer that you intend to.

The 10-day job plan

Run this in your first two weeks. It works far better than applying online from Bangladesh.

  1. 1

Day 1 โ€” get your IRD number

You cannot be paid properly without it, and the wrong tax code costs you around 15% of your pay. Apply online as soon as your bank account is open.

  2. 2

Day 2 โ€” open a bank account and get a NZ mobile number

No employer will hire you with a +880 number on the CV.

  3. 3

    Day 3 โ€” write a one-page Kiwi CV

No photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no religion. Name, NZ phone, NZ address, a two-line summary, availability by day, work history with achievements, two referees.

  4. 4

Days 4โ€“6 โ€” walk in with printed CVs

Twenty cafรฉs, supermarkets and shops. Ask for the manager, go between 2pm and 4pm when they are not busy, and say: 'I'm a student at [university], I'm available [days], and I'm looking for part-time work. Is there anyone I should speak to?'

  5. 5

Day 7 โ€” apply online in volume

Seek, TradeMe Jobs, Student Job Search (studentjobsearch.org.nz) and Indeed. Student Job Search exists specifically for you and employers there expect student availability.

  6. 6

Days 8โ€“10 โ€” use your flat and class

Ask every flatmate and classmate whether their workplace is hiring. Referral hires beat cold applications roughly four to one.

Kiwi CV rules that matter

  • โœ“
    One page, plain formatting

No colours, no photo, no graphics. Managers scan it in fifteen seconds.

  • โœ“
    State your availability explicitly

'Available Mon/Wed/Fri after 3pm, all weekend' answers their only real question.

  • โœ“
Use NZ spelling and phone format

'Organised', not 'organized'. Number as 021 xxx xxxx.

  • โœ“
    Quantify achievements

'Handled 60+ customers per shift' beats 'good communication skills'.

  • โœ“
    Two contactable referees

A lecturer and a previous employer. Ask permission first.

  • โœ“
    Mention your visa work rights

One line: 'Student visa with 20 hours/week work rights.' It removes the employer's biggest hesitation.

Turn a casual job into a career asset

The reference matters more than the wage. Stay at one employer for at least six months, take any extra responsibility offered โ€” cash handling, opening the store, training a new hire โ€” and ask your manager for a written reference before you graduate. An accredited employer weighing up sponsorship is asking one question: has anyone in New Zealand vouched for this person's reliability?

Never accept cash-in-hand

Under-the-table work leaves no payslips, no IRD record and no proof of employment for a visa application. It is also illegal for both parties. Every legitimate employer will give you a written employment agreement, payslips and holiday pay. If someone offers "no tax, cash only", walk away โ€” they will underpay you and you will have no evidence of it.
