City-by-city transport cards, student discounts, monthly cost in BDT, and how to convert your Bangladeshi driving licence.

Get your transport card in week one

Every city runs a tap-on card with fares 25โ€“35% cheaper than cash, plus a tertiary student concession that takes another 20โ€“40% off. Register the card online and link your student ID โ€” unregistered cards get no concession and no refund if lost.

Cycling โ€” the biggest saving available

A second-hand bike from TradeMe or a bike co-op costs NZ$150โ€“300 once and replaces roughly NZ$1,000 a year in fares.

A helmet is legally required and a front white light plus rear red light are mandatory after dark. Christchurch, Palmerston North and Hamilton are flat with protected lanes; Wellington and Dunedin are hilly and better suited to walking or buses. Register your bike's serial number with the police online โ€” theft is the main risk, and a NZ$40 D-lock is worth more than insurance.

Driving and your Bangladeshi licence

You can drive on a valid overseas licence for up to 12 months from arrival.

    Bring your Bangladeshi licence and a certified English translation

    NZ Transport Agency requires a translation from an approved translator, an NZTA-authorised translation service, or an International Driving Permit obtained before you leave.

    Drive on it for your first 12 months

    Carry the licence and translation together at all times โ€” one without the other is not valid.

    Convert before the 12 months expire

    Bangladesh is not on the exempt list, so you will sit a theory test and a practical test. Book early; waiting times can reach 6โ€“8 weeks in Auckland.

    Budget for the real cost of a car

    A reliable used car is NZ$4,000โ€“8,000, plus registration (NZ$110/yr), Warrant of Fitness every 6โ€“12 months (NZ$60โ€“80), insurance (NZ$600โ€“1,200/yr for a young driver) and petrol at roughly NZ$2.60/litre.

Intercity travel on a student budget

For trips between cities, InterCity coaches booked 3โ€“4 weeks ahead can cost as little as NZ$1โ€“20 on their early-bird fares โ€” often cheaper than petrol. Domestic flights on Air New Zealand and Jetstar drop sharply outside university holidays. Never book intercity travel in the week before semester starts; that's when prices peak.

Two rules that keep you safe

New Zealand drives on the left, and rural roads are narrow, unlit and far more dangerous than they look โ€” most serious crashes involving new migrants happen on open roads within their first six months. Also: always tap off. Forgetting to tap off charges you the maximum fare for the route, which quietly doubles your monthly transport spend.
