Get connected before you leave the airport
A New Zealand mobile number is required for almost everything in your first week: the bank, the university portal, the landlord, the employer and your transport card. Buy a prepaid SIM at the arrivals terminal โ every major airport has kiosks from Spark, One NZ and 2degrees.

Skinny is the quiet winner for students: it uses Spark's towers, so coverage is identical, but plans start around NZ$16 a month. The trade-off is no physical stores โ everything is handled online, which is fine once your account is set up.
Prepaid or postpaid?
Start prepaid. Always.
Postpaid contracts usually require a credit check or a New Zealand credit history you do not yet have, and they lock you in for 12โ24 months. Prepaid plans give you the same data and calling for a similar price with no commitment, and you can switch providers the moment a better deal appears. Once you have six months of NZ banking history, moving to a postpaid plan with a subsidised handset becomes possible โ but by then most students find they no longer need to.

Check your phone is unlocked and supports NZ bands
Unlock it in Bangladesh before you fly โ carrier unlocking from overseas is slow. New Zealand networks use standard 4G/5G bands that almost all recent phones support.

Buy the SIM at the airport with your passport
Providers must record your ID. Take the smallest starter pack; you can pick a better plan once you know your usage.

Keep your Bangladeshi number alive
Use a dual-SIM phone or an eSIM for your NZ line and keep the Bangladeshi SIM active with the minimum recharge โ banks, NID services and family accounts in Bangladesh still send OTPs to it.

Move your two-factor authentication before you switch
Change WhatsApp, Google, Facebook and your bank's verification to your NZ number, or to an authenticator app, while both numbers still work.

Register your number with the university and bank
Do it the same day. Every later step depends on it.

Add home broadband only when you settle
Fibre plans run NZ$65โ90 a month and usually need a 12-month term. In a flat, split it โ and check whether the property already has fibre installed before you order.
